The Onlymoso Bamboo
Growing Giant Bamboo OnlyMoso®
Growing Bamboo OnlyMoso, a giant bamboo variety, Phyllostachys edulis (or pubescent) that has excellent productive, qualitative and adaptability characteristics.
This species grows well in the temperate climate and also bears temperatures lower than the -20 ºC.
Growing Bamboo offers two income possibilities:
- Sprouts (which are collected after about 4 springs from planting)
- wood (which takes between 5 and 8 years)
The harvesting of the shoots does not damage the plantations, indeed the thinning favors the harmonious growth of the cultivation as there are 2 harvesting seasons: the spring months in which the shoots for food are cut and from September to February the adult culms (the stems) are cut.
For quality, hardness and strength, bamboo wood is comparable to essences such as oak and walnut
How does Bamboo grow?
Growing bamboo, being a grass, requires the same tillage as for a wheat field.
Despite the reputation of invasiveness of the plant, to effectively contain the spread of bamboo rhizomes it is enough to surround the cultivated plot with a moat of about 60-70 cm. The rhizomes do not exceed this depth and a real natural barrier is created that will not be exceeded by the rhizomes – Moreover, by cutting the shoots that grow on the ditch, lateral growth stops.
Our technicians always recommend the best solution for plant design:
- study the tracing of paths to create passable lanes of about 3/4 meters suitable for transporting production with tractors and trolleys
- Indicate and design the type of irrigation for the initial plant (with the right irrigation, the seedlings will develop more quickly and will lay the foundations for optimal production);
- advise the initial mulching that allows a saving of water and protection for young jets.
A bamboo forest OnlyMoso reaches maturity between 5 and 10 years depending on climatic conditions, soil and type of cultivation. After the first 4 years or so, the first sprouts are harvested, but in the presence of particular favourable seasons, the shoots can be harvested even after only 2 years.
Why grow the bamboo?
Who claims that bamboo is a plant alien to our territory, forgets that most of the food we eat and the wooden essences we use, come from plants brought from distant countries and continents.
Each period of change brings new challenges.
